Do You Need a Waterproof Metal Detector?

You may need a waterproof metal detector if you are going to hunt for buried treasure near or in the water.

While a waterproof metal detector is a lot of fun for treasure hunting in the water and for taking on diving expeditions, make sure you really need a waterproof metal detector before you lay out the extra money for one. Since most metal detectors have a waterproof search coil, most beachcombers don’t worry about getting the more expensive type of metal detector.

A waterproof metal detector commands a much higher price tag than one that just has a waterproof search coil. While it is certainly worth it to those who truly need or want to have the luxury of submerging their entire unit, there is no reason to pay the higher price if you just plan to stay on the beach.

One of the reasons people buy a waterproof metal detector is to hunt for gold flakes or nuggets in rivers. If this is the case, you may want to look at some of the models that are specifically designed for this. That is why it is so important to know what you will be searching for before you invest in any kind of metal detector, let alone a waterproof metal detector.

Some metal detecting enthusiasts prefer a hybrid, which is a metal detector that is used on land and in the water. Instead of having to purchase different metal detectors for different search areas, you can purchase just one that will go wherever you want it to. Just make sure that you are aware of whether your waterproof metal detector is submersible or just splash proof. Also, you will find many metal detectors that have a waterproof search coil but the housing that holds the electronic elements of the metal detector is not waterproof. With these, you can put the search coil in shallow water but you won’t be able to go very deep. However, for many people that like to go metal detecting on the beach, this type of metal detector gets the job done.

If you plan to take your waterproof metal detector diving, you’ll also need to ensure that you have waterproof headphones. Plan to pay more for accessories and components that are waterproof and plan to stay away from water when using those that are not.
